HOMER's Getting Started Guide walks the user through the design of a small off-grid wind system.  This is the best way to get familiar with HOMER's interface and optimization and sensitivity analyses.  It is also available through the Help system within the software.

HOMER's context-sensitive Help system is indexed and searchable.  It contains definitions of all the technical terms, explains all of the dialog boxes, and lists all of the formulas used within HOMER.

The best reference for more in-depth descriptions of HOMER's algorithms is Micropower System Modeling with HOMER. (Authors: T. Lambert, P. Gilman, and P. Lilienthal Published in: Integration of Alternative Sources of Energy, by F. Farret and M. Simões.

HOMER's Sample Files are a good way to get a head start on analyses.
