HOMER Energy's Island Mission
St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
Sir Richard Branson has declared climate change to be "the next great war". Branson's Carbon War Room is his attempt to leverage the skills of entrepreneurs to tackle climate change. HOMER Energy CEO Dr. Peter Lilienthal serves on the advisory board for the Island Nations initiative of the Carbon
War Room. He will be leading discussions on island nations at
the Carbon War Room's annual, invitation-only "Creating Climate Wealth" conference in The Washington, DC on May 3-4, 2011. This event will convene leading US executives, investors, entrepreneurs, and leaders from the private and public sector and is designed to promote investments in global low carbon, resource-efficient green economies.

HOMER Energy has been involved in numerous projects with island nations - including Bermuda, Anguilla, Haiti, and several remote (essentially "islanded") communities in Alaska. Also, through an international consortium called "Energy Development for Island Nations" (EDIN), HOMER Energy is helping to diversity the energy resources of the US Virgin Islands. Read more about how HOMER Energy is helping the US Virgin Islands reduce their dependence on oil.

Win Your Own Wind Turbine!
Wind-diesel systems combine generator sets (gensets) with wind turbine technology to provide electricity - often for remote, off-grid villages. The wind-diesel market is poised for rapid growth: fuel prices have been rising consistently during the last decades, growing environmental concerns are supporting investments in cleaner ways to produce power, and wind-diesel technology has matured through pilot projects and demonstration sites.

XANT turbines have been designed with the specific requirements of the remote, off-grid market segment in mind. They have fewer parts for maximum reliability and are designed to fit in a single 40-foot container for dramatically lower transport costs. Finally, the airfoils are optimized for low wind speeds.

SouthWest AirBreeze
In order to improve these features even further, XANT is seeking feedback from current users of wind-diesel technology. The company has created a brief survey targeting system installers, genset distributors and utilities operating the systems and would be most grateful for your feedback. One survey respondent will be randomly chosen to win a SouthWest Windpower Air Breeze. Please take the survey now.
HOMER Online Training

Have you downloaded HOMER and found you need help getting started? There is a lot to this feature-rich software that helps you design hybrid renewable energy systems and estimate their financial feasibility. Our new online training courses are perfect for the beginner HOMER user. You will be taken through the design of a system using HOMER from beginning to end.

We will use HOMER 2 (version 2.81) as a basis for the training, but HOMER Legacy (v2.68) users should be able to follow along and complete the exercises as well. A live instructor will lead you through the process and address your specific needs. Each session has a maximum of 22 participants, so you'll get personalized attention. We have multiple training sessions throughout May and June. Please check our catalog now and reserve your place!

HOMER Software: Try the Sample Files

New to the HOMER software? You might find that it's easier to begin if you use a sample file that's similar to your system type. The sample file gives you a base case, and then you can adjust the parameters to model your system without having to design the whole thing from scratch. There are quite a few combinations available, as well as resource inputs for Solar, Wind and Hydro Resources. Visit our sample download page here.

HOMER Tip: Graphic Options

Graphing with HOMER softwareHOMER supports a number of great ways to look at your data, but did
you know that you can customize and export your graphs?  If you
right-click on a graph in the Sensitivity Results, a menu will appear
with a number of useful options:

  • You can copy the graph to your windows clipboard to paste into other applications such as Microsoft Word.
  • You can save the graph as an image on your disk. HOMER supports exports both .png and .emf graphic file types.
  • You can also customize the properties and appearances of your graph. If you select this option, you can adjust the color schemes, the resolution of your graph and change the size of the diamond system markers. You can also change the graph title, the axis labels and displayed units.
