Dear HOMER users,
This is a personal note of gratitude to all the new users who had to put up with our new website before we got all the bugs out of it. We think that is done now and apologize to anyone who had trouble downloading HOMER. Please try again if you weren’t successful. If you have a suggestion for further improvement please send an e-mail to Support.

| HOMER Energy Consults on DOE/NREL Island Energy Project |
 |
| St. Thomas, USVI |
Islands have the highest electricity costs in the world because they depend on costly imports of fossil fuels. As a result, Iceland, New Zealand and the US joined in 2008 to create a partenership called Energy Development in Island Nations (EDIN). HOMER Energy is consulting on the U.S. Virgin Islands pilot project (USVI), which aims to fundamentally change the way people use energy. The USVI project seeks to achieve a 60% reduction in fossil fuel use by 2025, stabilize rising energy costs and create green jobs in the Virgin Islands. They hope to accomplish this through a combination of improved energy efficiency and development of local renewable energy resources. There's no shortage of wind and solar energy in the Virgin Islands, but to compare the financial impact of different energy investments over the next twenty years, the Water and Power Authority of the Virgin Islands will be using the HOMER modeling software. According to HOMER Energy CEO Peter Lilienthal, "HOMER allows us to weigh the benefits of building more solar capacity versus wind, for example, and model what kind of storage is economically feasible and how rising fuel costs influences the rate at which renewables should replace fossil fuels." |
| HOMER Energy to Partner on Hybrid Energy Systems for Tourism |

| Building integrated photovoltaics on the roof of Hawaii's Mauna Lani Bay Hotel generate 75k of electricity from the sun. |
Tourist destinations are ideal candidates for HOMER Energy modeling software, particularly if they are located in remote areas, but also if they simply want to use more renewable power to supply their electricity. Resort owners are increasingly conscious of the value of a lower carbon footprint and greener practices in all their operations. They have an important ally in Sustainable Travel International (STI), an organization that helps its members assess environmental impacts and move towards energy independence. Now HOMER Energy is teaming with STI to bring the tourism industry energy solutions that will reduce carbon impact and ultimately reduce electricity costs. More |

| Collaborate with HOMER Energy and Fund Your Feasibility Study |
| HOMER Energy is seeking partners who are interested in collaborating on hybrid energy development projects. We have identified a funding opportunity to bring you support on the feasibility, planning and modeling phase of your project. That support would come through a US federal agency whose mission is to promote exports of US technology. If you are a foreign entity in a developing country seeking to move forward on a hybrid energy project, HOMER Energy may be able to assist you with the planning and modeling phase. Please visit our web site for further information and requirements. More |
| HOMER Software Tip: Modeling Seasonal Loads |
| Although HOMER allows you to import a load file with as much temporal detail as you would like, there are several easier options. The easiest option is to create a 24 hour load profile and use that for the entire year, but that overlooks important seasonal effects. You can also create a separate 24 hour profile for each month (and make weekdays and weekends different.) There is an easier way to create seasonal loads if you only want a few seasons instead of 12 months. When you create a profile for January HOMER automatically replicates it for all of the following months. If you then go to April and enter a new profile, that profile will then be replicated for the months after April. You can do the same for July and October. You will then have four profiles for the four seasons. If you want the seasons can be any length starting on any month.
